Raincoats....hmmm

Recently I was in the POS, sheltering from the rain and I noticed a lady walking by in a raincoat.

My first thought was...... What dis big woman doing in a raincoat?

After a couple seconds I thought to myself; "Self ...but that lady is able to move from point A to B while you are standing under Republic Bank waiting for the rain to ease up."

This led me to think about why we stopped wearing raincoats. Was it because we've out grown them, or that they are too cumbersome, or that we live in a warm climate country. Perhaps it's because we have an umbrella culture, or that there aren't any adult size raincoats retailed in TnT.  Or all the above.

This prompted me to do some research and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised to see that raincoats need not be designed to have you looking like a giant garbage bag.

Nope!!!!!

They can be fashionable, funky and trendy and are sold on websites and stores such as Asos, Macy's and Nordstrom.

Just look at some of these options:

We love to dress up for work but on a rainy day, sometimes a regular umbrella just isn't enough. Unless you are in possession of a  large umbrella aka  "house and land",  you have to ensure that you, your handbag, lunch bag and shoes do not get wet. Most times one of those items just cannot be saved from those sprinkles.

Ladies, given the options presented would you wear a raincoat? Yeah or Nah?

I am familiar with your other relatives, too many to name but I shall mention a few.

 But none of them are quite like you.

You are the perfect combination of a pencil and wrap skirt. You drape so sweetly across the thighs, which is exactly where your main features exist.

Bless the man/woman that created you. You do not require much but a simple shirt and nice shoes as your presence is loud yet soft spoken giving women a flattering silhouette.

P.S.  The sole purpose of this post is to express my adoration for you.

Cropped and Capri Pants

They are not the traditional full-length trousers, as they are shorter and expose more of a woman’s legs, yet they have become very popular pieces of apparel in the work place.

Crops and Capris are often mistaken for each other but there is a difference between the two pants and this lies within their length. Crops fall right above the ankle while capris are between mid-calf and above the ankle.

There has been a lot of debate on the suitability of these pants for work. Many fashion bloggers are of the view that they’re just too casual and should not be worn in the office.

However, I support those that believe it's acceptable for the office. I think if it’s put together carefully it can be considered business casual.

Here’s a look at some options it can be easily styled with:

Sheer blouse tucked inside

Tapered blazer

Cardigan and inner blouse

Always always be mindful that the eye stops where the pant leg ends thereby making your shoes and feet the focal point. That being said.....your footwear must be on point; whether pumps, flats, wedges or dress sandals. So too must be your feet ladies. Make sure they aren't white and ashy. 

These pants can either be wide at the bottom or tapered. The one a woman selects should be based on the size of her legs. Women with thick muscular calves should avoid wearing the tapered crop pants as it makes her legs look much bigger than they really are. Women with small ankles or what we call in Trinidad “tin foot” should stay away from those with a wide base.

These are within the professional wear category and are replacing the power suit in the US and UK.

As chic as they look, I wonder how easily will they be accepted in the work place in TnT.

The decision to wear this piece will definitely be based on the office environment. In creative spaces such as advertising, marketing and even in the hotel industry, this would seem appropriate. However, if you are dealing with customers, you may want to discuss it’s suitability with HR or your seniors prior to you jumping out with this one.

Jumpsuits for work???

We wear them to go parties, attend functions, go out to dinner etc. Why can't we wear them to work? Sounds far fetched huh? There are some who totally disagree and believe that this 'oversized onesie' should not be apart of anyone's work wardrobe.

Me? I beg to differ. I am of the belief that if you can wear a high waist pants to work then you can definitely wear a jumpsuit.

The Jumpsuit is another versatile one piece wonder. It's an alternative to a pants suit and a dress. It's easy to put on and maintain and won't betray you like those wrap dresses (still love them tho). The only downside is that....well..... you will be practically naked when using the washrooms at work. LOL. Other than that, owning this piece would certainly up your wardrobe and office cred.

There are some guidelines to follow when selecting these for work though:

• Select one that fits you right and suits your body type.
• Your jumpsuit should not be to tight and form fitting.....you going to work; not a jam down session.Find one that has some structure to it and that fits on the looser side.
• Solid neutral colours such as black, grey, navy, tan etc are ideal. Stay away from bold patterns

• Pay attention to the length of the jumpsuit. If the bottom of the pants is flare, ensure that it covers your ankle pulleasssee....ain't nobody wanna be looking like dey crossing by City Gate after a lil rain fall.
• When it comes to accessorizing,  less is more. A simple neck piece should suffice. There's absolutely no need, in my opinion to use a chunky necklace with this piece. Remember, you are in the office. Also......easy with the setta noisy bangles; a cute bracelet, your watch and a nice lil ring will complete this look. You don't want anything to compete with your onesie...I mean jumpsuit.
• Please use proper undergarments. If you know there are certain areas of your body that requires strapping down, handle it!
• Layer it with a blazer and viola

Hell Yeah we can

Ties are predominantly a part of a man's formal attire. Nowadays ties are no longer exclusive to men.   This risqué but  cute fashion accessory can be incorporated into many looks for women and is an absolutely great way to add interest to your outfit. It will definitely make you stand out from the crowd. Both bow ties and neck ties can be used to create pretty cool ensembles without sacrificing your feminity.
